Not Fear, But Faith

He said to his followers, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Mark 4:40.

Jesus and His men were in a boat across a lake when they encountered a severe storm. During the storm, however, Jesus was sleeping comfortably on a pillow inside the boat. His men shook with great fear, thinking the storm was going to cause them to drown and die.

They immediately awoke Jesus and questioned Him as to why He was asleep while they were amid a severe storm. The Bible recounts that Jesus arose from His sleep and commanded the strong winds and waves to calm down. Immediately, the storm subsided and then Jesus in turn, asked his men why they feared so much. He questioned their faith.

During situations that cause us to fear and tremble, Jesus is expecting us to respond with great faith. He wants us to show our courage because courage is not the absence of fear, but the presence of faith. We ought to take the step of faith and ask The Lord to calm down the storm, rather than questioning Him. We must recognize Him as The Lord of the storm and fear not.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to replace every fear in my life with faith. Touch me with Your hand of courage and help me to be still and know that You are God, even in my storm. Amen!
